1. Randy's Introduction. AGM. Next month. Rajiv "Calendar" Gupta will be here for our meeting (national president). Due to his schedule, the meeting will be one week earlier than usual, now on November 13th. Randy gave a little speech about the Centre and the benefits of membership.
2. Observing Reports.
Randy showed everyone Phil McCausland's (pjam) photos from Star-B-Que. Randy noted that since this is the end of the year, members should think of what they want out of the Centre. One possibility was a course in how to use your telescope for beginners.
3. Annual Reports. The Observing Chair had his report ready. Wayne will order calendars for the next meeting. Calendars are $10, pins are also available. Comments: can we order better weather? There followed a discussion on the Universe Centre. Fred addressed people's concerns in his State of the Universe address. While most members agreed that prospects are beginning to look better now that the Provincial Parks department has stopped reorganising, some voiced concern that it might be better to get something started, however modest, such as the originally planned observing site. Fred noted permission from Butterpot Park would have to be obtained first. It was agreed that some thought should be put into the proposal. Randy answered questions about our possible astronaut visit: first, it would cost about $3000, unless we could piggy-back on an already scheduled event. The Canadian Space Agency also has several other requirements, such as scheduling events with local schools. Garry Dymond voiced some frustration over the email system for the Observing Group. He would prefer a phone list, as well.
4. Election of Officers. (We thank Donna Bourdeau for presiding over this.)
5. Ben Llewellyn gave an entertaining presentation on Extraterrestrials: A Field Guide for Earthlings, by Terence Dickinson. The art is by Adolf Schaller (Randy believes he worked on Sagan's Cosmos).
6. Coffee Break.
7. Garry Dymond showed a DVD entitled Universe, which he got through our membership with the planetarium association. The DVD was meant to be shown at a planetarium, but can also be viewed as a normal movie [when you can get those supposedly intuitive Macs to cooperate].
