Garry Dymond provided his introduction to the society, and also got everyone to provide their names.
Ben gave a book review of "The Art of Chesley Bonestel". We were shown some illustrations on the overhead.
Garry Dymond passed around a few sheets on observing the lunar 100, a RASC observing project that provides day by day projects to learn lunar observing.
Gary Case spoke about a scope workshop, tentatively arranged in two weeks time or so. It will be held at our usual meeting place and consist of scope sessions, and observing programs for people getting started with a new scope.
Robert gave us an overview of what is expected over the next month or so, along with a summary sheet. A sheet will be passed around so that those interested can put their data down to be contacted.
Fred Smith introduced our speaker for the night, Bill Kavanagh. Bill received his M.Sc. in 2006, covering Cosmology and Black Holes. Bill's talk progressed from an introduction to geometry, pre-relativity, special relativity, general relativity, and finally how black holes can form. Bill showed how geometry can be used to determine the characteristics of a black hole, when combined with the postulates of special relativity. There followed a good number of questions and answers.
