RASC St. John's Centre Monthly Meeting
February 20, 2002

Location: Chemistry/Physics Building, MUN

Time: 8:00 pm

Present: 28

1. Randy's Introduction. Star-B-Que will most likely take place August 9-10, though we don't have the date confirmed with Butterpot Park. The Saturn occultation was occulted by clouds here. Discussion of observations. Garry Dymond has been checking out Vesta.

2. Christmas Gifts and General Discussion. Mike Crawford noted we now have a laptop on loan from the university that can be used with the Centre's CCD. Garry Dymond showed us some pictures he has been taking.

3. Gary Case spoke on a few topics with a Powerpoint presentation. He noted that for people interested in getting scopes, you can go to the Celestron site and get a document entitled Telescope Basics (http://www.celestron.com). There are usually beginner's pages in Astronomy, Sky and Telescope, and SkyNews. Some further topics that were discussed:

Gary also wants ideas for the Observing Group. What should be the schedule? (There is a schedule circulating.) People interested in getting a call on scheduled nights or for other observing sessions were asked to leave their names and numbers on a sheet. Gary proposed we should meet within the city at a convenient location and then proceed to Butterpot if the weather cooperates. If the weather is bad, people should show up anyway, and discussion can proceed at the agreed upon location. The idea is to save people from driving out to Butterpot (and finding the gate locked) and to make sure the Observing Group has consistent meetings.

Oakfield got Universe in a Nutshell by Hawking, and found it good.

4. Fred on Books he got for Christmas.

5. Coffee.
