Location: Chemistry/Physics Building, MUN
Time: 8:00 pm
Present: David Bourgeois, Jack Cocker, Fred Smith, Garry Dymond, Randy Dodge, Florence McNeilly, Mike Crawford, Robert Babb, Brian Payton
1. $50 will be donated to the Palliative Care Unit at the General for Brian Payton's wife, Krista.
2. Next Month: John Scott on Aristotle's contributions to Astronomy. Dr. Scott is the head of the Philosophy Dept. Robert will do "The Sky Next Month." Randy will talk about Mir.
3. Month after next: Jack and Garry on computerised scopes. The month after that we will have Phil McCausland back for an update on his work on the Alaska meteorite. Randy will also talk.
4. Randy had a call from the CSA, checking up on things. We could check with the Deans of Engineering or Science (depending on the astronaut) for some funds.
5. Juanita (doing Ind. Trades and Tech. -- which includes local aerospace) and our very own Fred gave a presentation to the Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) regarding the Butterpot Project. They also spoke with Industry Canada last week (who gave them a list of sources of funding -- they are also in charge of the CSA). Fred is now working on the articles of association for the board. Parks will go to Deer Lake (only Sharon and Scott are left). Some movement in Committee, all think the project a go, so things are not dead.
6. Planetarium. Garry is still at it. Things are slower this year, though there would be no lack of groups from schools if someone could do shows during school hours.
7. National Council Meeting. We need a National Rep. Mike? Scheduling needs to be checked.
8. One-Day Course for MUN Continuing Studies. Diana Deacon has proposed a Saturday in June. All agreed it should be a practical course. We could try to have an observing session that night, as well.
9. Messier Marathon. Robert will have something for next meeting.
10. Astronomy Day. We missed out due to MUN strike, so this year we hope to do something on the day (instead of at the MUN science open house). Malls seem to have liability issues. It is proposed to check with Chapters (had 30-40 people stop by the last time we were at Chapters a few months ago). We could be at Chapters for several hours, if possible, at night. Randy will schedule with Chapters, do PSA's. There could also be a radio interview (say Chris).
