The College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador is a non-profit corporation established by the Massage Therapy Act, 2005. The Act originally came into force June 2002 and the Newfoundland and Labrador Massage Therapists' Board was established September 2002. A new Act was proclaimed in 2005 creating the College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador. Massage therapy is also governed by the Massage Therapy Regulations, 2005. The CMTNL is legislated to ensure high professional and educational standards for massage therapists. High standards of care protect the public. All massage therapists are required to be registered with the College and to be members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Massage Therapists' Association.

The mandate of the College is to:

  • Protect and educate the public
  • Regulate the profession
  • Set professional and educational standards
  • Enforce ethical conduct
  • Investigate complaints against registered massage therapists
  • Approve schools and programs of massage therapy
