Labrador Heart Health Coalition
The Labrador Heart Health Coalition Started the Year With a "Kick"
The Labrador Heart Health Coalition started this year off with a face-to-face meeting
held October 1 - 2, 2001, entitled Let's Kick Start the Heart Health
Coalition. The meeting was a great success with twenty people attending including new
members representing the Recreation Department in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the Medical
Officer of Health, Dr. Ian Feltham. During the meeting, Heart Health members received new
information about heart health as Gail Turner delivered a presentation on the LOPHID Heart
Health Study conducted in Labrador. Dr. Catherine Donovan then built upon this information
through a presentation on the past and present of the Newfoundland and Labrador Heart Health
Program. Carol Ann MacDonald provided us with information on resources, and we
can't forget Peggy Holmes with her input regarding the importance of tracking. With all
of this information, the Labrador Heart Health Coalition then set to work and developed a
Work Plan for the coming year. The Labrador Heart Health Coalition would like to say thanks
to the Provincial Heart Health Program for the enthusiastic presentations and their support
in planning this event.
Labrador West Busy Planning!!
The Labrador West Core Group of the Heart Health Coalition is meeting and busy planning
for winter activities. The Labrador West Core Group has had many successful events in the
past including health fairs and Ticker Tom Days, and they plan to keep this trend going
throughout the coming year. The best of luck in your planning!
Labrador is Trying to "Kick the Nic"
Following the Labrador Heart Health Coalition meeting in October 2001, a Kick the Nic
Facilitator Training Program was delivered by Bernie Squires, Provincial Youth Tobacco
Coordinator. Participants included public health nurses, guidance counselors and community
diabetes workers. Much thanks to Bernie for traveling to Labrador. We hope to see many
Kick the Nic youth smoking cessation programs in the future!
