Kick the Nic in Western

Western "kicked off" the Teen Stop Smoking Program in May with a two-day Kick the Nic facilitators' training workshop. The workshop provided an opportunity for interested individuals working with teens to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to support teens interested in quitting smoking. Stephenville High School and Herdman Collegiate in Corner Brook have hosted pilot Kick the Nic Programs, with 12 teens completing the program to date. The interest in teen smoking cessation in this region has been extremely hot! Six keen individuals, who had previously taken a smoking cessation training program, have been inserviced on the delivery of the Kick the Nic Program. This has resulted in at least three more Kick the Nic Programs around the Region. Way to go Western! Let's Kick those Butts!!!

Make Sense of the Food You Eat

To celebrate Nutrition Month, Regional Nutritionists Lesley French and Stephanie Buckle offered Nutrition Tours at a local grocery store to the staff of Health and Community Services Western.

These tours proved a great way to help participants become aware of some nutrition facts and myths; how they can take responsibility for their health; and, feel good about the food they eat.

Free Skating in Western

During the months of February and March, several communities throughout the Western Region offered a Free Skate to the general public. These skating activities were sponsored by the Western Heart Health Coalition and organized by public health nurses and nursing students. Through these events, community members and Health and Community Services staff enjoyed being active and received valuable information about preventing heart disease. Blood pressure checks were also offered to those in attendance. Thanks to all who participated in Deer Lake, Stephenville, Port aux Basques, Corner Brook and Port aux Choix. Approximately 600 people in total took part throughout the Western Region.
