St. John's Regional Coalition

Activities

  • The Ticker Tom Heart Health Program:
This program was developed in 1995 by the Coalition as an interactive and fun program which promotes the key heart health messages, healthy eating, active living, and being smoke-free, to children (5 - 12years) who participate in municipal summer parks and recreation programs. In the St. John's region over 600 children participate each summer. This was developed as a regional program and has now expanded as a provincial program. If you know of a group who may be interested in participating please e-mail Cathy Murphy (chair).

  • Heart Health for Life:
This 5-part cable television series was produced to promote the heart health message to a broader adult population. This series was shown within the region and across he province.

  • Heart Smart Restaurant Program:
A partnership was made with the Heart and Stroke Foundation to deliver this program. Restaurants throughout the provinces are offering healthier choices to their customers. This program is coordinated be the regional Heart Health Coalitions.

  • Smoke Free Malls Project:
The Heart Health Coalition conducted a survey with shoppers, in the larger shopping centers in the region, to determine the interest and acceptance in having the shopping centers go smoke-free. A very positive response was received and as a result the shopping centers have all adopted smoke-free policies.

  • Heart Health Booklet and Trivia Contest:
The Heart Health Coalition produced the materials and conducted the contest with 30 workplaces in the region to promote the heart health messages to adults. Over 6500 employees participated in the promotion during Heart Month. The booklet and contest have since been printed and distributed as provincial resources.

  • Summer Student Placement:
Each summer, the Heart Health Coalition provides employment for a student to coordinate Coalition activities. Funding for these placements has been received through Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) employment opportunities.
