Mandate
The Newfoundland Historical Society, founded in 1905, is the oldest non-profit, independent heritage organization in the province. Its mandate is to promote knowledge and public discussion of the history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador, which it does through free public lectures, publications, public symposia, heritage awards, and advocacy work.
Society Facts and Activities
- Founded in 1905, the Newfoundland Historical Society is the oldest heritage organization in the province
- The society has permission to use the provincial Coats of Arms as its logo.
- The Society's objective is to promote knowledge and public discussion of the history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador
- The Newfoundland Historical Society is a registered charitable organization supported by membership fees, donations, and sales of its publications
- Offers a fall/winter series of free public lectures
- Publishes books and bibliographies on Newfoundland and Labrador history
- Gives annual Heritage Awards
- Produces its own newsletter three times a year
- Membership includes a subscription to the Newfoundland Quarterly, in which the Society has its own section, "Aspects"
- Plays an important advocacy role in issues concerning history and heritage
