Kayaking in Newfoundland is incredible in spite, or perhaps because
of the weather. In any given year paddlers in Newfoundland will
paddle with or around the normal things we almost take for granted -
ice flows, caves, arches, seals, bears, ice bergs, whales, lots
and lots of whales, walrus, eagles, cormorant, all flavours of gull,
harlequin duck, puffin, turr, sunfish, giant leather back turtle on
occasion and the list goes on. Where else or what other sport can
claim this?
For white water, each year we have a number of first descents, and we
have some fabulous rivers that change day to day. We have several
very substantial rivers flowing north, south, east and west.
For
the off season we have a tight calendar; KNL have scheduled talks
and clinics on all forms of things. The Pool sessions, while not a
club event are being hosted again. This is a fine opportunity to
have fun or clean up questionable techniques comfortably. Between
clinics and the pool, it should be easy to average a kayak related
day a week this winter.
Come
summer there is no stopping a paddler from finding a place to launch
every day. For anyone visiting the province we have people paddling
almost all the time in conditions ranging from quiet calm day trips
of an hour or two, to testing their steel against swells, wind and
waves that chase larger boats back to their births.
If
you are thinking about getting into kayaking; do it! This is a great
sport. If you are pondering joining KNL, don't hesitate it is great
value; you will find friends and company to paddle with, with that
company you can gain paddling skills. Over time you will have a
network to draw on to improve and show off your talents.
Newfoundland and Labrador was created for kayaking.
Welcome aboard.
