Press Release: "Green Party prepares for St. John's West by-election."

For Immediate Release: February 23, 2000

Terra Nova Green Party prepares for St. John's West by-election.

The Terra Nova Greens are preparing for a by-election in St. John's West.  The Terra Nova Green Party is the provincial wing of the Green Party of Canada. While St. John's West is one of seven federal ridings in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"This by-election is a chance for the Green Party to make inroads in Atlantic Canada" exclaimed Jason Crummey T.N. Green Party spokesperson.

Our motto for the election will probably be "BAN DRAGGERS" said Crummey referring to the large factory freezer trawlers that are contributing to the demise of the North Atlantic fishery bio-mass.

"The three issues that we intend to stress are: Over fishing on the nose and tail of the Grand Banks; A Guaranteed Annual Income for all Canadians and The issue of Federal Provincial Transfer Payments." explains Crummey.

In order to gain the maximum exposure for the Green Party we are seeking a high profile candidate." said Crummey. "Green Party Leader Joan Russow or environmentalist David Suzuki would be ideal. The Sea Shepherd's Captain Paul Watson would be good too." said Crummey.

The Terra Nova Greens present their Green Book

"If an election is called in 1999, we will be ready",  states Hedley Pinsent, A Terra Nova Green spokesman.""The Green Book is our statement of policy. It is fairly extensive", explains Pinsent.

"In the Green Book we recognize three provincial deficits: the fiscal deficit, the social deficit and the environmental deficit.", states Pinsent, "Exchanging one form of provincial deficit for another leaves us no wealthier." he said.

"Taxes on income, payrolls and sales actively discourage economic activity by making employment expensive. We want a gradual and partial shift of taxes away from income and onto waste, landfill use etc. We want tax relief measures for low-income households." states Pinsent.

The Terra Nova Greens have developed policy on a wide range of issues including: a Guaranteed Annual Income "G.A.I.", social service programs and  environmental regulations.

The Terra Nova Greens is the Provincial Chapter of the Green Party of Canada. "While we are not yet a registered provincial party, we are looking forward to running several candidates, in the provincial election." explains Pinsent, "the Greens are here to offer sensible alternatives".

LETTER TO EDITOR of the Globe and Mail: Re: Seal Kill Higher than Quota Date
Date sent: Monday, 23 November 1998

I am writing this letter in response  to the Globe and Mail article
Seal kill higher than quota, study says . I am writing this letter
both as a private individual and as a member of the Green Party
Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Green Party supports free speech and encourages debate. And we
welcome Mr. Lavigne's opinions. However, I would like to make it clear
that ther are many good reasons why  the Green Party of Newfoundland
and Labrador supports a sustainable seal fishery on the East Coast of
Canada.

In defense of supporting a seal cull, it should be known that the
Newfoundland seal fishery  is closely supervised. And the seal cull
is, historically, one of the most controlled and monitored fisheries
in Canada. While ground fish have historically been fished with few
laws and little enforcement or supervision.

Unlike Mr. Lavigne's suggestion that the east coast seal fishery "...
threatens to devastate the country's East Coast seal population.", the
Newfoundland Chapter of the Green Party  believes that there is  no
scientific evidence to support this hypothesis.

Furthermore to compare the seal cull quota to the collapse of the
North Atlantic cod is inaccurate and borders on uninformed hysteria.

If indeed, as Mr. Lavigne suggests, "...that the seal hunt has
exceeded quotas by up to 100,000 animals through unrecorded losses in
each of the past three years." This is still an insignificant
percentage of the  five or six million seals that live on Canada's
East Coast.

The Green Party Association in Newfoundland and Labrador recognize
that the seal fishery is an emotional topic for Canadians. And we
certainly welcome debate in this field. However, the Green Party
Association of Newfoundland and Labrador would like to see public
interest focused on important issues such as the development of a
sustainable fishing industry, the banning of draggers, that destroy
the oceans bottom and the development of marine ecological reserves.,

Compared to the actions of commercial factory freezer vessels on the
east and west coasts of Canada, the sealing industry is a relatively
unobtrusive  activity.

sincerely,
hedley pinsent

Press Release
June 1998

Kathy MacDonald has been nominated to run for leadership of the Green Party of Canada. "Ms MacDonald will be the first Newfoundland woman to run for the leadership of a federal party," states Paula Gale, a Terra Nova Greens spokesperson.

"The Terra Nova Greens believe that Ms. MacDonald's nomination will help to bring awareness to such important topics as the environment, the economy and ecological issues," said Gale.

"The Green Party is here to offer alternatives," states MacDonald. "We want to put forward new ideas that have the ability to inform public policy. For example, I believe that it is paramount that any MAI (Multilateral Agreement on Investment) treaty enshrine environmental conservation as a fundamental principle."

"Atlantic issues that concern the Terra Nova Greens include the Seal fishery, the Terra Nova Greens want to see an ecologically sound seal fishery established. A seal harvest should be implemented when markets are available for the whole animal, but a seal harvest should not be used in an attempt to enhance fisheries," states MacDonald.

Another concern is the Capelin Fishery, the Terra Nova Greens recognize that capelin are the major food source of cod, seabirds and many whales. We believe that capelin fishery moratorium needs to be implemented until the numbers rebound," explains MacDonald.

The Green Party of Canada Leadership Convention will be held at the Green Party Bi-Annual General Meeting which will take place in Winnipeg, Manitoba from August 14-17, 1998.

Press Release
June 1998
Kathy MacDonald has been nominated to run for leader of the Green Party of Canada. MacDonald will be the first Newfoundland woman to run for the leadership of a federal party.

"I became interested in the Green Party because of the issues that concern me," said MacDonald. "I joined the Green Party because I believe in its principles and ideals."

"Newfoundland, indeed all of Canada, needs a party like the Green Party. The Green Party places the issues of social justice and the environment first and foremost," said MacDonald. "To me, the Green Party is a forum where issues like forest conservation and fisheries renewal can be discussed and new innovative policies can be developed," she said.

"Rural out-migration and the development of more stringent environmental laws are important issues that must be addressed," explains MacDonald. "In addition, I would like to see a federally funded ‘guaranteed national income' established for all Canadians. These issues need to be considered by Canadian society. In an attempt to raise the profile of these and other important issues I have decided to accept the nomination for leader," said MacDonald.

"In fact, Ms. MacDonald is not alone" explains Paul Gale, Terra Nova Greens spokesperson. "In the past, other members of the Terra Nova Greens, the provincial wing of the Green Party of Canada, have been active with the Green Party's federal election efforts as candidates and officers of the national executive," Gail said.

The Green Party of Canada Leadership Convention will be held at Winnipeg Manitoba on August 15.The Green Party Bi-annual Convention will occur between August 14-17, 1998.

News Release

GREEN PARTY WANTS A DECENTRALIZED ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

January 16, 1998 - The Green Party believes that centralized electrical systems caused the recent ice-storm disaster. "Ice-storms would cause only minimal damage were it not for our over-dependence on a centralized electrical system." says Green Party of Ontario leader, Frank de
Jong. "We need to rediscover self-reliance at the community level for such basic services as electricity and home heating."

Frank de Jong is a former resident of Newfoundland who now lives in Toronto. Before moving to Toronto, de Jong taught school in Carbonear. Newfoundland's Green Party Association has worked closely with de Jong and other Green Party associations to develop policies that will avert similar disasters.

The Green Party suggests community control of basic services. " Newfoundlanders know full well the havoc and destruction of ice storms, only when communities are in control of locally repairable, renewable technologies will people feel secure in the face of potential disruptions." states Hedley Pinsent, a spokesman for the Terra Nova Greens

The Green Party recommends the following:

* Decentralize the production of electricity. The phase out nuclear and fossil-fuel generated electricity in favour of smaller renewable electricity sources such as solar, wind and hydro.

* Require new buildings and homes to be designed to take advantage of passive solar heating and provide financial incentives for passive solar retrofitting of older homes.

* Provide financial incentives to increase insolation and window upgrades. The Green Party believes that retrofitting will create many thousands of jobs.

* Encourage rural homes to invest in electrical and heating systems powered by solar, wind, and wood fuel generation.

* Modify zoning laws to install district heating systems using renewable energy sources.

"The Green Party is here to offer alternatives. We, as a society, have to come up with long term solutions and not just think five or ten years ahead" states Pinsent.
