The Loyal Orange Order

The Orange Lodge was created during an era of sectarian violence. In 1795, the Orange Order was created near Portadown in the North of Ireland. The Orange Lodge was(and remains) exclusively protestant.

In the late 18th. century, religious violence reoccurred frequently in Ireland. And  and up to  20 000 Protestant Irishmen  rallied to the Orange Lodge. The Orange Lodge quickly spread throughout the British Empire, with lodges being formed  in Newfoundland, Canada, Australasia, England, Scotland, Africa and the Caribbean.  By 1810, Orange Lodges appear to have been well established in both Newfoundland and Canada.

The Orange Lodge has been referred to as "the world's first fascist organization". However,  the Orange Lodge members of  Newfoundland are not  radical. In fact, the Orange Lodge was largely a social club for rural communities. It must also be remembered that many different ethnic groups and religions have had exclusive, even secret societies.

The Orange Lodge was, and remains, a center for community activity in Newfoundland. For example, in 1903 Sir William Coaker founded the Fisherman's Protective Union (F.P.U.) in an Orange Hall in Herring Neck. Furthermore, during the term of Commission of Government (1934-1949), The Orange Lodge was one of only a handfull of  "democratic" organizations that existed in the Dominion of Newfoundland.
