INNU NATION:NITASSINAN

The territory of the Innu Nation  is named Nitassinan. Nitassinan is the large central region of Canada's immense Ungava peninsula. The Ungava peninsula is divided between the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Innu number approximately 16,000. They live in communities throughout  Nitassinan. The communities include: Utshimassit, Sheshatshit, Pakuashipi, Unaman-Shipit (La Romaine), Nutashkuan (Natashquan), Ekuanitshit (Mingan), Uashat (Seven Islands),Utshimassit (Davis Inlet), Maliotenam, Betsiamites, Essipit (Les Escoumins), Mashteuiatsh (Point Bleu), Matimekush and Kawawachikamach.
 

Sheshatshiu (Sheshatshit) and Utshimassit (Davis Inlet) are in Labrador. Sheshatshiu (Sheshatshit) is an interior community  and Utshimassit (Davis Inlet) is a community located on the Labrador Sea.

In Quebec, the communities of Mashteuiatsh, Kawawachikamach and Matimekush are deep in the interior of the Ungava peninsula. While, Essipit (Les Escoumins), Betsiamites and Uashat-Maliotenam (Seven Islands), Mingan, Natashquan, La Romaine and Pakuashipit  (St. Augustine) are dotted along the remote Lower North Shore of Quebec.
