In November 1605 Guy Fawkes with 36 barrels of gunpowder attempted to blow up the English Parliament.Fortunatly, the conspiraters were uncovered and the massacre was prevented. 

The genesis of the Gunpowder plot is unclear. Some historians accept it was an attempt to re-establish the Catholic religion in England. However, many believe it to be the work of Agents-Provocateurs, anxious to upset English democracy. On the fifth of November, Newfoundlanders on the island's North East coast commemorate this event with campfires, bonfires and celebration.
