A brief Biography of the Newfoundland National Convention Delegates to Ottawa, July 1947.




T.G.W. Ashbourne (1894-1984) b. Twillingate. M.H.A. for Twillingage 1924-28. National Convention delegate for Twillingate 1946-48, M.P. for Grand Falls-White Bay-Labrador 1949-58.

F.G. Bradley (1888-1966) b. St. John's, Newfoundland. Admitted to the bar 1915, M.H.A. Port de Grave 1924-8, Trinity Centre 1928-34, Minister without Portfolio 1924-6, Solicitor General 1929-32, Magistrate 1935-9, National Convention Delegate Bonavista South 1946-8, M.P. Bonavista-Twillingate 1949-53, Secretary of State 1949-53, Senator 1953-66. Bradley served as Chair of the National Convention. He was a signatory of the Terms of Union and was the only National Convention delegate to attend all three National Delegations.

C.H. Ballam (1901-1981) b. Curling, Newfoundland. President of Newfoundland Federation of Labour 1939-40, National Covention Delegate for Humber 1946-1948. M.H.A. for Humber  1949-56, Humber West 1956-66 , Minister of Labour 1949-66. Ballam campaigned for Confederation and was an early supporter of J.R. Smallwood.

L.L. Burry (1898-1977) b. Safe Harbour, Bonavista Bay. Ordained a United Church minister 1924. National Convention Delegate for Labrador 1946-8. President of the Newfoundland Conference of the United Church 1959-60. Burry was pro Confederation. With his election to the National Conventionin 1946 Burry became the first elected representitive for Labrador.

P.W. Crummey (1891-1960) b. Western Bay, Newfoundland.  Crummey studied at the Methodist College in New York, U.S.A. Upon returning to Newfoundland he became a school teacher. Crummey eventually became the Superintentent of the Methodist Scool Board, A Commissioner for the Newfoundland Supreme Court and a Justice of the Peace.

Crummey was a National Convention Delegate for Bay de Verde 1946-8. At the National Convention Crummey advocated a return to Responsible Government. He was defeated as the Progressive Conservative candidate for Carbonear/Bay de Verde in 1951 and 1956.

J.R. Smallwood (1900-1992) b. Gambo, Newfoundland. National Convention Delegate Bonavista Centre 1946-8, Premier of Newfoundland 1949-72. Smallwood was an outspoken Confederate.

Smallwood was author of many books including: Coaker of Newfoundland (1927), The New Newfoundland (1931), I Chose Canada (1973), The Book of Newfoundland (1937, 67, 75), The  Encyclopedia of Newfoundlandand Labrador (1981) etc.
