In the world of advanced technology and internet, it is challenging for human rights organizations to reach the general public that seems to have become desensitized to calls for action for protection of the basic human rights.
The Film Club, through documentaries, videos and films, informs, educates and seeks to mobilize members of the general public who are concerned with the state of world's human rights.
The Amnesty International Film Club is an initiative of the St.John's Group 60 of Amnesty International Canada [English-Speaking Branch]. The club has its roots in the Amnesty International Human Rights Film Festival in St.John's, the attendance and comments of which showed a grave need for a regular spot for film/documentary screenings. As a campus organization at Memorial University, the Club holds meetings and screenings at the university.
The mission of the Amnesty International Film Club is to raise awareness of the human rights situation around the world, including Canada in communities of varying ages, from elementary school children to university students to seniors.
Since May 2004, more than thirty documentaries have been shown covering themes of various global issues, touching upon the reproduction of nuclear weapons around the world, women's and children's rights worldwide, human rights situation in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Burma, Tibet, Israel and the Occupied Territories, Canada. etc.
There are many that have made the film club a continuing series of documentary screenings. The dedicated volunteers run the show. They organize screenings, promote the events and invite guest speakers. Without them, the film club wouldn't exist.
The film screenings are free with suggested donations of $1 to cover the shipping costs of the screened films and videos.
The Film Club maintains a mailing list for members who wish to receive e-mails about upcoming screenings. Visit the "contact" section to e-mail the film club. Please include your full name and your primary e-mail address.
Hope to see you at our screenings!
