Algeria:
Group 60 has taken on work on behalf of ALLAOUA ZIOU, a farmer in Algeria who disappeared in 1995.
Alloua
Ziou
We are attempting to discover what has happened to this man. We know that thousands have disappeared in Algeria in recent years; some are known to have died, others are simply missing, with no further information available. We know that human rights violations have been committed by both the government and armed opposition groups; but efforts to discover information about what has happened to the disappeared have in most cases met with a wall of silence until recently.
However, things are now changing. A society known as "SOS Disparus" ("SOS Disappeared") has been created to help unveil the truth. Families of the disappeared have also formed an association with the same goal. And the Ministry of the Interior has opened offices to record complaints from families. By June 1999, 3,500 cases had been recorded.
