In April 1997, The Terra Nova Green Party fielded its first Federal Candidate, Jon Whalen. Jon Whalen ran in the Federal Riding of St. John's East.

The Green Party Registered Agent was B. Newhook.  The Green Party Campaign Manager was P.M. Gale. Both reside in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Whalen's platform included the banning of Draggers, developing a policy for a sustainable seal harvest and readjusting the federal/provincial transfer payments formula.
