"Healing a Fractured World"

The Baha'i community sponsored a public talk, Healing a Fractured World, by Dr. David Smith on Saturday, July 24, 2004 in The Conception Bay Room of the Delta Hotel.  This was delivered to an over-flow gathering as Dr. Smith captivated his audience with numerous personal stories while delivering the message of Baha'u'llah, the unity of humankind, in very clear terms.  Dr. Smith is a high ranking officer of the Baha'i Faith and travels extensively internationally on behalf of the Faith.

Professionally, Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Toronto, a Specialist in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus Surgery, and a Staff Surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Humber River Hospital, both in Toronto.  In his spare time he serves as of the President of the Canadian Chito Ryu Karate Association, and holds a 6th Degree Black Belt in Karate and Renshi (Teacher).

NOVEMBER 13 to 16, 1999
The provincial Bahá'í community hosted the first meeting in the province of the National Spiritual Assembly. The meetings, held in St. John's, were in recognition of a coincidence of anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the Act of Parliament incorporating the Baha'i Community of Canada (April 30), the 50th anniversary of Confederation (March 31), the 50th anniversary of first Baha'is living and working in St. John's, and the 30th anniversary of establishment of Local Spiritual Assembly of St. John's. The schedule included the usual business meetings of the NSA, community events, media interviews and courtesy calls to a number of public officials.

OCTOBER 23 TO 25, 1998
The Points of Contact Conference can be considered very successful. There were 153 individual registrations for the event, representing all of the hoped for participants: family members (both hearing and not), Deaf, deafened, Hard-of-Hearing, hearing, professionals and others. The specially commissioned play "Butterfly Wings" by Fred Hawksley was viewed by over 200 enthusiastic people on Friday and Saturday nights.

The two keynote speakers gave very stimulating and thoughtful talks that were well received and led to very helpful consultation and increased understanding of all sides of the many questions. Out of this, there will be more discussions and consultations that start from the service needs of the individuals, rather than organizational needs. A key part of the consultation was the use of the Baha'i model of Consultation. A pamphlet on this form of consultation was used at the Conference, and is available here.

JUNE 5 AND 6, 1998
Dr. John Leblanc, of Dalhousie University and the IWK- Grace Health Care Centre in Halifax, NS gave two talks on Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, on the general topic of Healing and Faith.
Friday, June 5, at the Health Sciences Centre, MUN, he spoke on

MEDICINE , FAITH AND THE HEALING PROCESS

Saturday, June 6, at theArts Annex, MUN, he spoke on

HEALING FOR THE BODY AND SOUL

Both talks were well attended, and lead to interesting discussions.

FEBRUARY 12, 1998
The St. John's Bahá'í community made a submission to the Department of Education, at a focus group meeting on February 12, 1998, in response to a request for comment on the Interim Edition of the Curriculum Framework for Religious Education.

SEPTEMBER, 1994:    PAPER ON FEASTS AND HOLY DAYS
The St. John's community made available, via an announcement in the Sept/Oct 1994 issue of Bahá'í Canada, a paper on Nineteen Day Feasts and Holy Days in a Very Different World, stimulated by the Holy Year, the 1992 World Congress and by local experience. This paper is now available at this site, due to a recent request for the paper from a friend who was going through old issues of Bahá'í Canada.

1992: The Holy Year
For the Holy Year of 1992, the local community created a Banner of Celebration, which depicts many of the important events in the life of Bahá'u'lláh.  1992 marked the inception of a Holy Year, during which the Centenary of the Ascension of Bahá’u’lláh was observed by commemorations around the world and the inauguration of His Covenant was celebrated, in the City of the Covenant (New York), by the holding of the second Bahá’í World Congress there.

This Banner is frequently used at community events.

APRIL 1991: Submission to the provincial Royal Commission on Education
The St. John's community made a written presentation to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Delivery of Programs and Services in Primary, Elementary, Secondary Education (The Williams Commission).
