Celebrating the "Old Days"...
The Port Blandford Heart Health Committee celebrated the
International Year of Older Persons (IYOP) with an
"Olden Days Fair" and "Old Fashion Time" on February
27th. The "Olden Days Fair" was held in the afternoon
in the setting of antiques, quilts and demonstration of
traditional crafts such as knitting a cast net. People
were entertained with song and music by the young and a
solo skit by a “young at heart”, Mrs. Lucy Greening.
In the evening, the "Old Fashion Time" featured a
variety of performers from Port Blandford, as well as
other areas. The Heritage Dancers from Norman's Cove
danced traditional square dances, and encouraged the
crowd to join in the fun!
True to the theme of IYOP, the events crossed the
generations - people from three years to eighty years
enjoyed the day. A special thank-you to everyone who
helped to make the day a great success!
Placentia Enjoying Heart Healthy Food...
Fun was on the menu at a get together for staff of
Health and Community Services in Placentia. Agnes
Careen, Community Health Nurse, organized the event
and invited people to bring along some heart healthy
food. Tara Gordon, dietitian with the Placentia Health
Centre, was invited as guest speaker. Everyone had a
great time exchanging recipes and enjoying a delightful
meal!

Stop Smoking Program for Women...
Nineteen people attended a two-day facilitator training
workshop in September on Stop Smoking: A Program for
Women. The workshop was sponsored by Health and
Community Services, Eastern Region and the Eastern Heart
Health Network. Those who completed the training
included Health and Community Services staff, Family
Resource Centre/Baby Club staff and community
volunteers.
Additional sessions are set for Holyrood, Bonavista,
Port Blandford and Riverhead, St. Mary's Bay.
Further information on the facilitator’s training or the
program can be obtained by contacting Natalie Moody, at
(709) 466-6334, Health and Community Services Eastern
Region.
Christmas Promotion...
Special coffee breaks, lunches, Christmas crafts and
gift giving were some activities of the "12 Days of
Christmas" in which staff of Health and Community
Services, Eastern Region, participated in December.
This was the second year for the Christmas promotion
and as last year, proved to be a great success!
This year, a challenge was made to staff to write
"creative" poems. Much of the success of the promotion
is attributed to the participation of the office
representatives for Healthy Hearts at Work - an Employee
Assistance Program initiated in Eastern Region.
Looking forward to the 12 Days of Christmas again in
1999, with activities for the International Year of
Older Persons and the year 2000!!
