Detailed Description of the River
The first corner on Maccles Brook is the worst. It is essentially an unscoutable 1 m ledge (II+)
with a clean tongue on the left. The first real rapid (III+) is just downstream and can be
scouted fromt the river right shore. This is sweet boof move into the slot over a 1 m ledge.
All the water pumps out of the slot creating big smiles. Boogy water for a stretch relaxes most
boaters and after crossing a very short steady a distinct horizon line appears. Scout on the
river right. This drop (IV) has certainly caused some moans over time. It is a rocky slide that
is trickier than it looks, lots of stuff hidden in there to knock you off line and bump your head
on before you get stuck in the hole at thebottom. A bit of class III action below this leads
you up to the Canyon (V) This is the first big drop on the river. Dodging around the shallow,
rocky entrance ledge can be tricky and once you drop off the 2 m ledge and into the slot it is
non-stop action before you hit the final 2.5 m ledge that launches you into the pool at the
bottom. It is fairly important, but difficult, to hit the final ledge on the right side. There is a
massive boulder lurking on the left side that has to hurt when you hit it. The far river right side
of the central fin is a 5 m (V+) waterfall with a very tight river right line that has never been
run.
